Educational Visit to the University of Ghana
MentorHer Ghana at The University of Ghana- 2025
A Day of Learning and Discovery
On Thursday, 20th November 2025, the MentorHer Ghana girls were honored to receive an invitation to the University of Ghana, Legon to participate in an important conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) held at the UG Halls.
The conference was organized by WACCBIP (West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens), a leading institution in scientific research and public health awareness
The session covered key topics including:
Understanding antibiotics and how they work.
What are antibiotics?
What do they treat?
Are they important?
Is it advisable to use antibiotics on viral, parasitic or fungal infections?
What are Pathogens,
What are opportunistic Pathogens?
What Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is about.
What is AMR?
How dangerous is AMR?
Is AMR present in all living things?
How do you know there's an Antimicrobial Resistance in an organism?
The causes and effects of AMR
What causes AMR
Does agriculture have a way to do with AMR?
Is it only human activities that lead to AMR?
Is it true that AMR is a silent pandemic?
Which has the dangerous impact on AMR, misuse or self-medication?
Do you think AMR is found even in hospitals?
Practical prevention measures
Are there safety measures to control AMR
Are these control methods expensive or quite difficult to adhere to?
Are these measures easy to follow in our homes, workplaces and in public?
Can everyone be an Ambassador of AMR?.
Career paths and opportunities in AMR research
What are the careers associated with AMR study?
What is special about each career path?
Are these careers important?
Biochemistry Lab Tour:
After the conference discussions, we were taken on a brief but exciting tour of the Biochemistry Laboratory. We observed scientific equipment, research setups, and learned how laboratory work contributes to understanding diseases and developing solutions. This exposure gave us a glimpse into possible future careers in science and research.
City Tour & Final Stop at Independence Square
As part of the day’s experience, we enjoyed a drive through some of Accra’s most iconic landmarks, including:
Kotoka International Airport
The Jubilee House
The Parliament House
The day ended beautifully at Independence Square, where we reflected on the experience, bonded as a group, and captured memorable moments.
Looking Forward
This visit was a meaningful reminder of the power of mentorship, education, exposure and empowerment—core values that continue to guide MentorHer Ghana’s mission.
By engaging with real-world science and national institutions, the MentorHer Ghana girls continue to grow in knowledge, curiosity, and confidence.
We extend our appreciation to WACCBIP and the University of Ghana for this impactful opportunity, and we're looking forward to being great AMBASSADORS of AMR.
